I was waiting at the checkout line in Wal-Mart on Highway 54. As I waited in line, a generous man made an offer of kindness that touched my heart. Now, I know I must have looked a little odd sitting in an electric shopping scooter; however, I was not prepared for the goodness that I received. While waiting in line the man behind me proffered to pay for my groceries. I was shocked and all I could simply say was thank you. When I returned home, I reflected upon this blessing that I received. I wish I would have thought to say more; however, at the time I was overwhelmed with gratitude and could simply say thank you. One hears so much of the tragedies in our world, that we often forget about the good. We often overlook, the small simple gestures of kindness that we receive. I am accustomed to paying for my own groceries; however, someone taking the time to offer to generously assist me, especially when I didn’t think that I needed assistance moved me profoundly. This experience with the generous man was something new to me and it made me reflect upon what I am grateful for. I am grateful for the generous offer of this kind man. As this offer helped me to reflect upon what I am grateful for this year. I am thankful for my family, for all of my children. I am grateful that I can assist at my home parish, getting to serve at each weekday Mass. I am thankful for the many members of my parish family, who have taught me so much about what it means to love God and neighbor. At this stage in my life, gratitude is an experience that truly describes how I see each day. As each day is a new beginning and an opportunity for me to receive blessings.
