The author G.K. Chesterton once stated: “An adventure is only an inconvenience rightly considered. An inconvenience is only an adventure wrongly considered.” Chesterton had a unique vision of the world. He recognized that at every moment we have many things coming our way, and how we perceive these moments makes all the difference in the world. For Chesterton, the world is filled with many wonderful moments and it requires our proper reflection in how we engage them.
For our prayer lives, often it is difficult to recognize that God is present in our struggles. What is helpful to overcome this difficulty is taking the time to recognize what this adventure we are engaging truly is. If we take the moment to realize that God has given us all that we need, that He has not abandoned us, then we can better appreciate the good work that He is doing in our prayer.
St. Ignatius in his 7th Rule reminds us of this reality. That God has given us all that we need to grow in holiness. If we acknowledge this, then we are able to engage our prayer in such a way that we grow in fervor, strength and joy.
