Christmas season is over, all the decorations are gone and now we begin the ordinary time. Christmas is over but the spirit of joy and the spirit of Christmas remains because as believers, as Christians, we are joyful people. Today’s gospel is about making disciples for Jesus, how our testimony can bring people close to God, inspire people to follow Jesus and touch lives. In the gospel, we read the story of John’s witness to Jesus. When John the Baptist saw Jesus walking by, He pointed Him to his disciples by exclaiming: Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Here is the Lamb of God, John witnesses Jesus. Notice that John did not say look at me! There is one more word in John’s proclamation: “Behold.” It’s a command to look to Jesus. John doesn’t say, “Look at me! I’m a great prophet!” He doesn’t say, “Look at my good works; they will save you.” He doesn’t say, “Look at my religious rituals; they will put you in good stead on judgment day.” He says, “Look to the Lamb of God!” Jesus saves sinners who look in faith to Him. John testified Jesus in deeds and words. Behold the Lamb of God. Like John the Baptist, our mission is to witness Jesus and in doing so, we make disciples for Jesus. The question is: How? How to witness Jesus among families members, relatives and friends? In our first reading reminds us that we are light of the world. As believers, all we say, all we do, can touch lives and bring people close to God. It is time to share with our brothers and sisters how Jesus helped us to overcome our resentment, our anger. It is time to tell our friends how prayers help us to become who we are. Tell how the word of God helps us to forgive, and detach from material things. Tell them how the Eucharist gives us peace and joy, and how to see the beauty of God in each person. We need to tell them how important is our faith.
